Gleaming silver tiles greet your eyes. Welcome to the Silver Pagoda a breathtaking temple within Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace. This isn’t just any pagoda. It’s a treasure chest of Cambodian history and artistry.

Originally built of wood in 1892 under King Norodom it was inspired by Bangkok’s magnificent Wat Phra Kaew. King Norodom Sihanouk even lived here for a year while Preah Phnos was under construction. He took monastic vows here in 1947. The pagoda was later rebuilt in 1962. The Khmer Rouge surprisingly preserved it showcasing their supposed care for Cambodia’s cultural heritage. Sadly much was lost or destroyed after the Vietnamese invasion.

Step inside and marvel at the incredible floor. Over 5000 silver tiles weighing 5 tons create a shimmering expanse. Sadly most are hidden for protection. You can only see a small portion near the entrance. But the beauty of what is visible is stunning.

The Emerald Buddha is a sight to behold. This isn’t some ancient relic from a forgotten age. Sources disagree. Some claim it’s 17th-century Baccarat crystal which is impossible as Baccarat didn’t exist until the 18th century. Others say it’s 19th-century Lalique glass. Regardless its beauty is undeniable. It sits atop a gilded pedestal radiating serenity and splendor.

Next to it stands a life-sized solid gold Maitreya Buddha. Created between 1906 and 1907 this majestic statue originally held over 9500 diamonds. The largest weighed a whopping 25 carats. Sadly many were lost during the Cambodian Civil War. The remaining diamonds still shimmer though a testament to its past glory.

The walls are adorned with murals painted in 1903-1904. Forty skilled artists under the direction of the pagoda’s architect Oknha Tep Nimit Mak painstakingly depicted scenes from the Reamker. This Khmer version of the Ramayana stretches 642 meters long. Sadly the murals were damaged by weather vandalism and decay. Restoration efforts in 1985 and later in 2015 helped revive the vibrancy and detail.
