Feel the gentle breeze. It whispers tales of the Adyar River. This waterway once flowed freely. It was a vital artery for Chennai. It’s a river steeped in history and culture. For centuries the Adyar River served as a vital transportation route. Boats ferried people and goods. Its banks bustled with activity. It was also a place of leisure. People enjoyed boating and sightseeing. The river’s beauty captivated many. It was a picturesque scene featured in numerous Tamil films from the 60s and 70s. The Adyar River’s history is fascinating. Initially known as the Vanmiki River it is one of Chennai’s oldest waterways. The first bridge in Chennai the Elphinstone Bridge was constructed across the Adyar River in the 1840s. It connected South Madras to Santhome and Mylapore. Before this only a causeway existed the Marmalong Bridge now known as the Maramalai Adigalar Bridge. The northern bank of the Adyar River was a prime residential area for European Company officials. They built elegant houses along its banks during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Sadly the Adyar River’s pristine waters are now polluted. It carries dangerous pollutants and sewage. It can no longer sustain aquatic life or plants. Much of Chennai’s untreated sewage flows into the river. Sandbars block its mouth. This prevents tidal flushing. Only during monsoon season does the river receive freshwater from rainfall. Heavy rains can cause the river to overflow. This can lead to flooding as seen in 2015 when the Chembarambakkam lake released excess water. Efforts are underway to clean the river. These include building retaining walls to prevent garbage dumping. Regular waste excavation and public education on water conservation are also crucial. The Adyar River’s history is rich. It has witnessed battles between the Pallavas and Chalukyas at Manimangalam its source. The Battle of Adyar was also fought here between the French East India Company and the Nawab of Arcot’s forces. The river’s banks are home to prominent institutions. These include the Theosophical Society Anna University and the Madras Boat Club. The Adyar River is more than just a waterway. It is a living testament to Chennai’s vibrant past. Its revival is a testament to hope and the enduring spirit of this city. Let us strive to restore this once-pristine river to its former glory.
