Beyond Chennai’s bustling streets lies a story of faith. It is the story of the Advent Christian Church. This church’s roots stretch back to 1880. An English military captain, Capt. Spence, discovered Advent Christian literature. He embraced their beliefs.
The American Advent Mission played a key role. They ministered in Tamil Nadu for 129 years. Madras, now Chennai, became their base. Their work included evangelism, literature distribution, and medical care. They also cared for underprivileged children.
In 1886, evangelistic work gained momentum. A printing press arrived in Madras. This allowed the printing of many tracts. The Advent Christian Church grew.
Two schools opened in 1892. Captain Spence’s daughters joined the mission. They dedicated their lives to service.
The Women’s Home and Foreign Mission Society took charge in Velacheri in 1898. A terrible famine struck India in 1900. The women cared for many orphans. Orphanages opened for boys in Velacheri and girls in Guindy.
In 1901, the printing press operated in Bangalore. It printed tracts in seven languages. William Edwards and Jess Saunders were the first missionaries from America. Edwards initiated industrial training. This equipped Indian boys with valuable skills. Missionaries arrived from various countries. They dedicated years of service to the Lord in India.
The first Advent Christian church was established in Guindy in 1902. Many people embraced Jesus Christ. Numerous churches emerged through the efforts of Indian workers. These workers served as headmasters and pastors. Women, as Bible-women, spread the gospel. They reached women confined to their homes.
Orphanages evolved into hostels. These hostels supported children pursuing higher education. Intermediate schools emerged in villages. Theological education was provided to pastors. A Bible School opened in Velacheri in 1955.
The Advent Christian Conference of India formed. By 1978, the work was fully managed by Indian nationals. Missionaries started ministries in other areas. A College of Evangelism was established in 1983. By 1988, these churches formed the Fellowship of Blessed Hope Churches.
Today, the Advent Christian Church continues to thrive. It operates numerous churches in Chennai. The church also runs schools and various social programs. These initiatives include de-addiction centers and homes for children affected by HIV/AIDS.
However, the church has also faced challenges. In recent years, there have been allegations of financial mismanagement. Despite these issues, the Advent Christian Church remains committed to its mission. It continues to serve the community. It spreads the message of faith and hope.
