Adolf Ey was born in Clausthal in 1844. He studied theology and modern languages at the University of Göttingen. During his studies, he became a member of the Burschenschaft Brunsviga. After university, he taught at an English institute near Lake Geneva. Later, he became a teacher in Hanover. He taught newer languages at Lyceum II. He was promoted to senior teacher in 1894.

Adolf Ey became a professor in 1892. He lectured in French at the Hanover Technical College. He retired in 1898 to focus on writing. Adolf Ey wrote poems, stories, and fairy tales. His works often featured his home in the Upper Harz region. In 1914, he published his autobiography. It was titled “Confessions of an Old Schoolmaster”. His works appeared in the art magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus.

The Adolf Ey Street Bridge is named in his honor. The street was named on his 80th birthday in 1924. He lived on this street in the Waldhausen district of Hanover. A street in Clausthal-Zellerfeld is also named after him.
