Stretching out before us is the Admiralteysky District. It is more than just a location on a map. This district pulses with the heart of St. Petersburg.

Admiralteysky District was established on March 11, 1994. It was formed by merging the Leninsky and Oktyabrsky Districts. This area is rich in history. It has a vibrant present.

The district borders the Neva River to the north and west. It is also bordered by the Yekateringofka River to the southwest. The areas around Gorokhovaya Street mark its eastern boundary. Finally, areas near Zagorodny Avenue define its southern edge.

Admiralteysky District has a population of 157,897 as of 2010. This is a decrease from the 187,837 recorded in 2002. The district covers 13.82 square kilometers. This makes it a densely populated part of the city.

Many waterways cross the Admiralteysky District. The Moika River runs from east to west. The Griboedov Canal and the Fontanka River also traverse the district. The Obvodny Canal and Sadovaya Street add to the intricate network. Two radial highways originate from the Admiralty. These are Gorokhovaya Street and Voznesensky Prospekt. It continues as Izmailovsky Prospekt. Other major avenues include Moskovsky, Lermontovsky and Staro-Petergofsky.

Much of the Admiralteysky District lies within St. Petersburg’s historical core. This area is between the Bolshaya Neva and the Fontanka. Its layout took shape mainly in the first half of the 18th century. The area between the Fontanka and Obvodny Canal developed in the second half of the 18th century. The area south of the Obvodny Canal joined the city limits in the early 19th century. Its layout was completed in the second half of the 19th century.

Outstanding architects shaped the district’s appearance. K. Rossi, O. Montferrand and G. Quarenghi are among them. A. Stackenschneider and A. Zakharov also contributed significantly. Their ensembles and monuments decorate the city.

Consider St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Imagine the Senate and Synod buildings. Picture New Holland island. Think of the Yusupov palace and garden. The Mariinsky Palace also stands here. And of course, there is the Admiralty itself.

Famous sculptures adorn the Admiralteysky District. The Bronze Horseman is a symbol of St. Petersburg. Monuments to Nicholas I, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and M. I. Glinka can be found here.

Today the Admiralteysky District has two operating railway stations. The Baltic railway station is on the embankment of the Obvodny Canal. The Vitebsky railway station is on Zagorodny Avenue. The first Russian railway began here. It ran from St. Petersburg to Pavlovsk. The Tsarskoselsky railway station was the oldest in Russia. It was later rebuilt and renamed Vitebsky railway station.

Several metro lines serve the district. Line 1 includes Pushkinskaya, Institute of Technology and Baltic stations. Line 2 has Sennaya Square, Institute of Technology and Frunzenskaya stations. Line 4 includes Spasskaya station. Line 5 offers Sadovaya and Zvenigorodskaya stations.

Admiralteysky District is more than just a collection of buildings and streets. It is a living testament to St. Petersburg’s rich past and dynamic present. Take a moment to absorb the history and culture around you. It is truly a remarkable place.
