“Sawasdee krap!” Ever wondered why this monument commands such respect? We are standing before the Admiral Prince Klomlouang Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Monument War memorial. It is a tribute to a man deeply woven into Thailand’s naval history.

The Admiral Prince Klomlouang Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Monument is more than just a statue. It represents the legacy of Prince Abhakara Kiartivongse. He was the founder of the Royal Thai Navy. He is revered as “The Father of the Thai Navy”.

There are over 200 monuments to the admiral. This one in Pattaya is perhaps the most famous. This is because Sattahip naval base is nearby. The admiral founded the base in 1922.

Look at the bronze statue. It depicts Admiral Prince Klomlouang Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi in full ceremonial uniform. He is mounted on a stone pedestal. The pedestal is lined with black marble. Figures of sailors surround it. The entire composition rises over 15 meters high.

This location on Pratumnak Hill is significant. It is one of the highest points in Pattaya. It provides stunning views. You can see the Gulf of Thailand and Ko Lan. Pattaya Beach is visible and also Pratamnak Hill. It offers a view of the entire central part of the city.

Navy Day on November 20 is important here. Also May 19 is the memorial day for the admiral. Ceremonies take place at the Admiral Prince Klomlouang Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Monument on these days. Military honors are given. Delegations of foreign sailors often attend.

The prince was the 28th child of King Chulalongkorn or Rama V. He was born in 1880. The prince demonstrated his dedication to naval advancement. He studied naval warfare in England. Then he returned to Siam. He then served in the Royal Siamese Navy. He significantly modernized the service.

Prince Abhakara saw the strategic importance of Sattahip Bay. In 1922 he offered royal land to build naval facilities.

Sadly the prince’s life was cut short. He died on May 19 1923 at the age of 42. His health declined.

Every year on May 19 Thailand observes Abhakara Memorial Day. We honor his contributions to the nation. The Admiral Prince Klomlouang Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Monument stands as a reminder of his vision. It also shows his dedication to the Royal Thai Navy. It ensures that his memory lives on for generations to come.
