Did you know that Adlai E. Stevenson High School in the Bronx closed its doors in June 2009? Its story is one of challenges and transformation. Let’s explore its history and what it has become today.

Adlai E. Stevenson High School was once located at 1980 Lafayette Avenue. It was in the Soundview section of the Bronx. The school faced difficulties. These included high truancy, violence, and a low graduation rate.

Due to these issues, the New York City Department of Education decided to close Adlai E. Stevenson High School. But this wasn’t the end of the story. The closure paved the way for a new beginning.

The site became part of the New Century Schools initiative. Several smaller, specialized schools were created on the Stevenson Campus. These schools aimed to provide more focused and supportive learning environments.

Today, the Adlai Stevenson Educational Campus houses multiple schools. Among them are Bronx Community High School and Bronx Guild. Also present are Gateway School for Environmental Research and Technology. Millennium Art Academy and Pablo Neruda Academy for Architecture and World Studies are here too. The School for Community Research and Learning and Bronx Compass also share the campus.

In addition to the high schools, two middle schools are located here. These are Bronx Bridges High School and Antonia Pantoja Preparatory Academy. This transformation created a diverse educational hub.

Adlai E. Stevenson High School had notable alumni. One was Monique Holsey-Hyman, a politician, social worker, and professor. Another was Ed Pinckney. He was a former NBA basketball player for the Boston Celtics.

Although Adlai E. Stevenson High School no longer exists as it once did, its legacy continues. The campus now offers various educational opportunities for students in the Bronx. The spirit of learning and growth lives on through the new schools.

The story of Adlai E. Stevenson High School is a reminder. It shows how communities can adapt and innovate to meet the changing needs of their students. While the original school faced challenges, its transformation has brought new hope. It also offers new possibilities to the students of the Bronx.
