Lost in the labyrinthine passages of Adham Khan’s Tomb. That’s what they call it. Bhool Bhulaiya. A maze.

Before you stands Adham Khan’s Tomb a testament to Mughal architecture and a tale of betrayal. This 16th-century structure in Mehrauli Delhi is more than just bricks and mortar. It whispers a story of power family and justice.

Adham Khan was a general in Akbar’s army. He was the son of Maham Anga Akbar’s wet nurse. His rise was swift. His fall even faster. In 1562 Adham Khan murdered Ataga Khan a favorite general of Akbar. The emperor’s fury was immediate. Adham Khan was executed by being thrown from the ramparts of Agra Fort.

Akbar however ordered the construction of this magnificent tomb. A strange act of justice perhaps. A poignant reminder of the complex web of family loyalty and imperial power. The tomb reflects the architectural styles of the Lodhi and Sayyid dynasties. Its octagonal design is unique among Mughal structures. Some say it was a deliberate choice. A symbol of betrayal.

The tomb’s interior is a marvel. Numerous passages wind through its walls creating a labyrinth. A real Bhool Bhulaiya. In the 1830s a British officer Blake converted it into his residence. He even removed the original graves. Later Lord Curzon restored the tomb. Adham Khan’s grave was returned. His mother’s however was never found.
