Did you know that Adenta Municipal District was born out of a split? It emerged from the former Tema Municipal District on February 29 2008. Adenta East serves as its capital. The Adenta Municipal Assembly stands as one of the twenty-nine districts in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region.

Originally Adenta was part of the Tema Municipal District. The Tema Municipal District was once the Tema District Council. Adenta and Ashaiman Municipal District split off. The remaining part became the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.

Now picture this district. It sits centrally within the Greater Accra Region. La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly borders it to the north. Kpone Katamanso Municipal District and Tema Metropolitan District lie to the east. To the south, you will find Ledzokuku Municipal District and Krowor Municipal District. Accra Metropolis District marks its western border.

The Adenta Municipal District covers 92.84 square kilometers. The latest census in 2021 recorded a population of 237546.

Adenta is known for the West Africa Secondary School. The school is a second cycle institution. Adenta is also known for the SSNIT Housing. SSNIT means Social Security and National Insurance Trust. It is located on the Accra – Aburi Highway. It is located after Madina.

Greater Accra Region was once known as Accra Capital District. In 1960, it was part of the Eastern Region. A minister oversaw its administration. On July 23 1982, Greater Accra became a separate region. This happened through the Greater Accra Region Law.

The region operates through traditional and political levels. Traditional administration handles customs and land. Political administration deals with law and decentralized government. The local government system derives its authority from Ghana’s Constitution. It also follows the Local Government Act 1993.

Now as we conclude our visit to Adenta Municipal District, remember its unique history. From its formation to its landmarks, Adenta contributes to the vibrant tapestry of the Greater Accra Region.
