Were you aware that Adendorf’s history stretches back to around 400 AD? Archaeological finds prove early settlements in this area. Adendorf is a municipality in the district of Lüneburg. It is located in Lower Saxony Germany.
Adendorf sits just four kilometers northeast of Lüneburg’s town center. The two have largely grown together. Adendorf and its surrounding areas create a densely populated area. Together with Lüneburg it totals around 108500 residents. The first documented mention of “Adenthorpe” was in 1252. It was then a farming village with 18 farms.
Adendorf’s name has evolved over time. It was called Adendorp around 1248 and Adendhorpe in 1275. The name likely comes from a personal name “Athal”. This is derived from the Germanic word for nobility. So Adendorf means “Settlement of Atha”.
The Johanneskapelle stands as one of the oldest buildings. It was built before 1258. The chapel is dedicated to John the Baptist. It survived three devastating fires. These fires occurred in 1374 1627 and 1895.
In 1374 the Lüneburg Succession War caused a fire. In 1627 during the Thirty Years’ War another fire broke out. Careless soldiers caused the last fire in 1895.
In 1644 a knight’s estate was established. It existed until the 20th century. It later became a state-owned teaching estate. By 1970 the estate and nine brick factories had disappeared. New businesses construction and cultural facilities boosted Adendorf’s population. This brought new economic prosperity.
Adendorf resisted being incorporated into Lüneburg in 1974. Only Ebensberg and Olm became part of Lüneburg. In 1976 the Elbe Lateral Canal breached near Erbstorf. Five million cubic meters of water flooded the area.
Adendorf is twinned with Saint-Romain-de-Colbosc France since 1987. It is also twinned with Wągrowiec Poland since 2001.
The Emmaus parish includes the Johanneskapelle. The Emmaus Church was built in 1962. The Catholic Christ-King Church was built in 1962. A New Apostolic Church was built in 1976.
Us Heimathus is housed in a historic farmhouse from 1661. Exhibits showcase local history rural life and native wildlife. The local archive is also located here.
The Walter-Maack-Eisstadion is the only ice stadium in the district. It is home to the Adendorfer EC ice hockey team. Next to it is an outdoor swimming pool open from May to August.
Most Adendorf businesses are small and medium-sized. Schluckwerder a confectionery company has two production sites here.
Adendorf is located at the end of the A 39 autobahn. The B 4 federal road continues from here. The B 209 also runs through the municipality. The train station in Adendorf is planned for reactivation.
Since 2022 a StadtRAD station has been available. It is located on the Rathausplatz. It offers five bicycles and an e-cargo bike.
Adendorf’s library has existed since 1956. It is located next to the town hall. It hosts readings concerts and puppet shows.
