High above Chemnitz the Adelsberg stands. A popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. Its peak reaches 508 meters. A true landmark of the Adelsberg district.

Adelsberg itself is a fascinating place. It wasn’t always the district we know today. In fact Adelsberg was formed in 1934. This happened through the merger of Ober- and Niederhermersdorf. These two villages had existed since around 1300. Oberhermersdorf was first mentioned in 1290. Niederhermersdorf was first mentioned in 1331. Both were originally Frankish settlements. They were later part of the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery.

Before its current name Adelsberg had a different story. An earlier village called Adelsberg existed in this area. Sadly it was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. This area lay deserted until it was resettled in 1728. Parts of it were eventually united with the Hermersdorf areas in 1881. The official name Adelsberg only came into being in 1934 after the acquisition of the remaining land.

The Adelsberg’s history isn’t just about settlements. A document from 1474 mentions the Adelsberg. Two miners asked the Saxon Elector for permission to mine. Traces of medieval mining are still visible near Adelsbergstrasse. You might notice them near a local inn.

Tragedy also struck Adelsberg. During World War II Anglo-American air raids devastated the area. Fifty-three people died in Adelsberg. This included 27 women 10 men and 15 children. A memorial was dedicated in 2005 to remember them. It stands in a communal grave in the cemetery.

Adelsberg is more than its past. It’s a vibrant community. It boasts numerous detached houses. It also has a local shopping center called Adelsberger Zeile. Adelsberg even has a popular bowling alley.

Winter brings another attraction. The Katzenbuckl hill is a favorite for sledding and skiing. Locals also call it Hasenhugel or Sauberg. The hill attracts residents from surrounding districts.

The Adelsberg district is well-connected. The inner-city highway Sudring opened in 2006. It connects Adelsberg to other parts of Chemnitz. You can also reach Adelsberg via the B 174. This is an autobahn-like road leading to Zschopau and even towards the Czech Republic.

The Adelsberg district maintains its village charm. Industrialization has thankfully had little impact on this beautiful district. It continues to be a peaceful area with quick access to major roads. Despite being close to Chemnitz’s city center Adelsberg offers a tranquil escape. So take a moment to appreciate this place its history and its enduring spirit.
