Who was the selfless Abbess whose legacy lives on in this very statue? Before you stands the Adelheid-Statue a poignant tribute to Saint Adelheid of Vilich. This isn’t just a statue it’s a window into a thousand years of history faith and Bonn’s rich past. Adelheid wasn’t just an abbess she was the first abbess of the monastery founded in 978 in Bonn-Vilich. Her life was marked by unwavering devotion and remarkable acts of charity. Imagine the challenges she faced leading a convent during times of severe drought and famine. The Adelheid-Statue depicts her holding an abbess’s staff a symbol of her authority and spiritual leadership. Notice the details too a stringed instrument and a table laden with bread a jug and fish suggesting her compassion for the poor and her dedication to providing sustenance. On the other side a young student is depicted partially hidden by her robes symbolizing her commitment to education.

The story of Adelheid is inextricably linked to the Pützchen spring. Legend says during a devastating drought Adelheid prayed for heavenly intervention. When she touched the ground with her staff a miraculous spring erupted ending the famine. This spring became a significant pilgrimage site the origin of the Pützchens Markt a large annual fair that still takes place today. This shows the enduring impact of her actions and the profound respect she inspired.

Adelheid’s influence extended beyond Vilich. Around the year 1000 at the request of Archbishop Heribert of Cologne and with the emperor’s intervention she also became abbess of St Mary in the Capitol in Cologne. Her reputation for kindness and generosity spread throughout Cologne where she continued her charitable work caring for the needy during times of hardship.

Her life however wasn’t without its struggles. The Vita Adelheidis a biographical work reveals the challenges of balancing her duties at two monasteries. Her sisters in Vilich felt neglected as she devoted time to Cologne. Despite this Adelheid remained a steadfast leader admired and respected. Even today several churches monasteries and schools in Bonn and Cologne bear her name reflecting her lasting impact. She was declared a Servant of God in 1922 and canonized in 1966. In 2008 she became the third patron saint of Bonn solidifying her place in the city’s history and heart.

The Adelheid-Statue itself is relatively recent. Created by sculptor Elisabeth Perger it was unveiled in 2015. Standing at approximately 1.4 meters tall and weighing two tons this statue is a powerful testament to a remarkable woman a leader a saint and an enduring symbol of Bonn.
