“Synagogue attacker’s appeal is rejected” a headline once declared. Today we stand before the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale. It is a vibrant center for Jewish life. Adath Israel is not just a building. It is a testament to community and resilience.

The Conservative Synagogue of Riverdale’s story began in 1954. Rabbi Max Kadushin was its first leader. The Hebrew school was the first building erected. In 1962, a new sanctuary opened. Percival Goodman designed it.

In 1973, the Conservative Synagogue merged with Adath Israel of the Grand Concourse. A plaque commemorates this union. It reads “We loved our house of worship. It enriched our lives and uplifted our souls.” This plaque embodies the synagogue’s spirit.

In 2000, tragedy struck. On the eve of Yom Kippur, a firebombing attack threatened the synagogue. Fortunately the Molotov cocktails did not ignite. Two men were arrested. They were prosecuted under New York’s Hate Crimes Act. The act increased penalties for bias-motivated crimes. Mazin Assi received 15 years in prison. Mohammed Alfaqih received four years. The community stood strong against hate.

The incident became a landmark case for hate crime legislation. The courts upheld the hate crime conviction. This affirmed that attacks against religious institutions are serious crimes. The synagogue president called the appeal “an affront to our common humanity.”

The Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale has notable members. Ruth Westheimer also known as Dr. Ruth was a member. She was a Holocaust survivor and sex therapist. Norman Salit served as a notable rabbi.

The synagogue offers daily services. There are morning and evening prayers. Regular holiday services are held. There is also a monthly havurah alternative service. Extensive child-focused programs exist. The Marsha Dane Hebrew School is popular. Various adult education programs are available.

CSAIR launched a capital campaign in 2003. This secured a sound financial future. The sanctuary was beautifully renewed. A handicapped-accessible entrance was added. It ensures that everyone can participate in Jewish life.

Riverdale is a diverse neighborhood. It has people of different ages and backgrounds. The Jewish community collaborates across ten synagogues. They cooperate and live together in harmony.

Adath Israel stands as a symbol of faith. It represents community and perseverance. Its history reflects both joy and sorrow. Its doors are open to all seeking spiritual growth. The synagogue’s story continues. It evolves with each prayer. It changes with every act of kindness.
