In 1920, Governor Guggisberg, dissatisfied with the Gold Coast’s education system, envisioned Achimota School. Achimota School was more than just a school. It was meant to be a symbol of progress, a beacon of hope for a brighter future. Achimota School, originally called Prince of Wales College and School, officially opened in 1927. It was a revolutionary co-educational boarding school, a first for the Gold Coast. Its founders, Guggisberg, Reverend A. G. Fraser, and Dr. James Aggrey, dreamt of a place where young minds could flourish. Achimota School quickly gained a reputation for academic excellence. It nurtured leaders, shaping the future of Ghana. Kwame Nkrumah, Edward Akufo-Addo, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Evans Atta Mills, all future presidents, walked its halls. Kofi Abrefa Busia, a former prime minister, both studied and taught there. Even Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s second president, was an alumnus. The school’s motto, “Ut Omnes Unum Sint” meaning “That they all may be one”, spoke to the founders’ belief in unity. This is reflected in the school crest’s piano keys. Aggrey explained it best: “You can play a tune of sorts on the black keys only; and you can play a tune of sorts on the white keys only; but for perfect harmony, you must use both the black and the white keys.” Achimota School sits on a sprawling 525-hectare campus within the Achimota Forest Reserve. The campus itself is a blend of colonial architecture and lush landscapes. Libraries, chapels, dining halls, sports fields, a swimming pool, and even an arboretum. Beyond its academic offerings, Achimota School fostered practical skills. Departments dedicated to science, mathematics, the arts, music, and home science equipped students for diverse paths. From its early days as a combined primary, secondary, teacher training, and university-preparatory institution, Achimota School has evolved. The University College of the Gold Coast, now the University of Ghana, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology both have roots at Achimota. Achimota School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a legacy of leadership, a testament to the power of education, a place where “Akoras,” as its alumni are known, continue to make their mark on the world.
