Achasanseong Fortress, perched on Achasan Mountain, offers magnificent views. You can see the Hangang River and the Seoul skyline. This 200-meter-high fortress was built to face southeast. It watches over the strategic waterway. Locals call it Janghan-seong or Gwangjang-seong.
Imagine this place centuries ago. Three kingdoms fought for control. Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla clashed here. The location was strategically important. King Gae-Ro of Baekje met his end here. The Goguryeo forces sent by King Jang-Su defeated him in battle. General Ondal of Goguryeo also died here fighting the Silla army in 590. These hills echo with the cries of warriors.
Originally built by Baekje, Achasanseong Fortress was later occupied by all three kingdoms. Its history is layered with conflict. King Chaekgye of Baekje ordered it fortified. He knew a Goguryeo invasion was coming. Achasanseong Fortress played a key role in defending the Baekje capital. The capital, Hansong, needed protection from the north.
In 475, Goguryeo forces overran the fortress. They also breached other defenses of Baekje. King Gaero of Baekje was captured. He was brought to Acha and executed. Silla conquered the fortress and the Han River valley in 553. General Ondal later tried to reclaim it but failed. He died here during the attempt.
Achasanseong Fortress has a perimeter of about one kilometer. Its area covers roughly 3375 square meters. The fortress sits 200 meters above sea level. It was designated a historic landmark in 1973. Since then, it has become a popular tourist destination. People come to learn its history and enjoy the views.
Today, Achasan Mountain is a resting place for citizens. It offers a historical trail and a natural park. Walkways, mountain paths, and sports facilities dot the landscape.
