Accra Zoo

Hidden within the embrace of Achimota Forest lies Accra Zoo. It’s a haven of nature, a world away from Accra’s bustling streets. Accra Zoo’s story begins in 1961. Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, envisioned it as a private menagerie, tucked away behind Flagstaff House. It was a place to entertain his guests. However, Nkrumah’s rule ended in 1966. The menagerie opened to the public, becoming the Accra Zoo. The zoo remained there for decades. Then, the government decided to relocate the seat of government to Flagstaff House. The zoo needed a new home. In 2006, the animals were moved to Kumasi Zoo while a new location was prepared. Achimota Forest, with its tranquil atmosphere, was chosen. The move brought the animals closer to their natural habitat. In 2005, an exciting partnership began. The West African Primate Conservation Action (WAPCA), supported by the German Embassy, collaborated with Accra Zoo. Together they created the Endangered Primate Breeding Centre. This centre houses endangered mammals, contributing to their preservation. Accra Zoo plays a vital role in protecting endangered species. The dedicated staff rescues orphaned monkeys, including the White-naped Mangabey and the critically endangered Roloway Monkey. Some animals arrive from the pet trade market, others from European zoos. This careful exchange helps maintain genetic diversity within the captive populations. Even during challenging times, like the COVID-19 pandemic, life finds a way. A White-naped Mangabey was born at Accra Zoo, bringing joy to the staff and WAPCA. Today, Accra Zoo is home to over 150 animal species and around 160 individual animals. You can encounter lions, safely secured in their enclosure. You can even hold a royal python, a non-venomous snake. It’s an unforgettable experience, a chance to face your fears. Accra Zoo isn’t just about observing animals. It’s about appreciating wildlife, understanding the importance of conservation, and connecting with nature.
