Established in 1909 Accra College of Education stands proudly before you. Its history is rich. It began as Accra Teacher Training College. Only 24 students attended the first classes. Mr W H Baker was the first principal. Imagine those early days. Simple classrooms maybe just a single storey building. The focus was clear teacher training. Preparing educators for Ghana’s future.
Over the decades Accra College of Education evolved. It moved locations. From Accra New Town to its current home in East Legon. It transitioned from a day college to a residential institution in 2001. This expansion reflects the growth of the institution itself and the growing demands of education in Ghana. The campus expanded. New facilities were built. More students enrolled.
The college’s curriculum broadened. Initially focusing on Certificate A programs. It now offers Bachelor of Education degrees. Specializations in areas like Early Grade Education Primary Education and Junior High School Education are available. Subjects taught include Mathematics ICT Science Geography Social Studies and several languages. Accra College of Education continues to adapt to meet the evolving needs of Ghana’s educational system.
In 2006 a significant event occurred. Mrs Laura Bush wife of the then US President visited. President John Kufuor of Ghana joined her. They launched a program to create reading materials for basic schools. This highlights the international collaboration and the college’s role in national development. Accra College of Education also participates in national and international initiatives. The T-TEL program funded by DFID for instance.
