“Gambatte” This word echoes through the halls of the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School. It means “prepare persist and never give up”. This motto perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this unique institution.
The Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School is more than just a school. It’s a vibrant blend of Eastern and Western educational philosophies. Located in Hyde Park it serves students from all over Boston. Its diverse student body reflects the city’s rich tapestry. Fifty-seven percent are Black twenty-four percent are White sixteen percent are Hispanic and three percent are Asian.
The Academy uniquely combines the high standards and discipline of Asian schools with the creativity and individualism of Western education. Students participate in Asian-inspired routines. They clean their classrooms and common areas. They practice rituals of greeting and respect. Yet they also benefit from Western practices like small advisory groups and a wide range of extracurricular activities. Every day includes art or gym class.
The Academy’s approach yields impressive results. In one year seventy-three percent of students achieved proficient or advanced status in English language arts. Ninety-one percent did so in math. Every senior received at least two college acceptances. All matriculated into college. The graduating class earned over $2.5 million in scholarships.
In 2007 the Academy expanded. A capital campaign allowed them to purchase the building they previously leased. Eight new classrooms and a “Great Room” for community events were added. The school also expanded to include fifth grade adding seventy-five students. These new students added to the school’s energy. Visitors can see engaged students in a variety of lessons.
The Academy’s success stems from its belief that all students can reach high standards. Some students might need more time or support. The school day runs from 745 am to 410 pm or 5 pm. Students participate in tutoring or extracurricular activities in the late afternoon. Students enter the Academy through a public lottery each March.
The Academy fosters a close-knit community. Alumni speak of their peers pushing them. They describe a supportive yet competitive environment.
