Ever wonder what a griffin guards in Philadelphia? At the Academy at Palumbo High School, it’s the students. This Art Deco masterpiece, formerly known as Bartlett School and Frank C. Palumbo Junior High School, stands proudly in Bella Vista. Designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1930, Academy at Palumbo transitioned from elementary to high school in 2006. Its mission is to sharpen minds through critical thinking, problem-solving, and tech skills. In 2010, competition was fierce. 1750 students applied, with only 700 accepted and 190 ultimately enrolling. The Academy at Palumbo boasts a diverse student body. About 49% of the students are African-American. The school offers an impressive range of extracurriculars. From the Asian Culture Club and Chaotic Step Team to Robotics and Students Run Philly Style, there’s something for everyone. Sports enthusiasts can choose from badminton, baseball, basketball, crew, and many more. The Academy even has a dual enrollment program with Arcadia University. Beyond academics, Academy at Palumbo has earned accolades. Their robotics team, the RoboGriffins, won the CoderZ Pro League World Championship in 2020-2021. The women’s volleyball team aced the Public League championships in 2019. This school’s spirit shines as bright as its Art Deco facade. Recognized as a historic building and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, the Academy at Palumbo continues to nurture minds and inspire future generations.
