Could the walls of the Academic Administration Building speak what stories would they tell? This building stands as a testament to Chulalongkorn University’s rich history. It is a cornerstone of Thai education.

The Academic Administration Building history began long before its construction. The land it occupies was once paddy fields in the mid-19th century. King Chulalongkorn later purchased the land for a palace. The palace was intended for his son Crown Prince Vajirunhis. It was to be known as Windsor Palace.

The prince passed away before residing there. The land was then granted to the Survey School of the Royal Survey Department. This later became the School of the Ministry of Agricultural Administration.

In 1911, King Vajiravudh founded the Civil Service College of King Chulalongkorn. He granted the college use of the entire estate. In 1917, the college was re-established as Chulalongkorn University.

The Academic Administration Building holds a special place as the first permanent structure. It was built from 1915 to 1921. It became the university’s main building. Initially, the eastern side of the campus was dedicated to academic and administration buildings. The western side was for agricultural research.

Designed by Edward Healey, the Academic Administration Building initially held classes for the Faculty of Arts. In 1997, it underwent restoration. Today, it is reserved for special occasions. Its architectural significance is recognized. It is listed as an ancient monument. It received the ASA Architectural Conservation Award in 1987.

As you stand before the Academic Administration Building look closely. Notice how it blends Thai-style elements. Observe how it incorporates modern construction methods. This reflects Thailand’s transition to constitutional monarchy.

The building has witnessed significant moments in the university’s history. It has seen the growth of faculties. It has seen the expansion of the campus. The Academic Administration Building stands as a symbol of Chulalongkorn University’s commitment to education. It embodies its dedication to progress.

Today, Chulalongkorn University owns 1,153 rai of land in Pathum Wan District. 637 rai are dedicated to academic use. The Academic Administration Building remains a vital part of this vibrant campus. It is a reminder of the university’s past. It is a beacon for its future.
