Founded in 1991 the Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza stands before us. But its roots stretch back much further. They go all the way to 1949. Back then it was known as the Scoala de ofiteri de militie din Bucuresti.
The Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza has undergone many transformations. It changed names and focus several times before becoming the institution we see today. In 1951 it became the Scoala Centrala de Ofiteri Miliie din Bucuresti. By 1953 it was the Scoala Pregatitoare Ofiteri Miliie Bucuresti. Later in 1953 it was known as Scoala Ministerului Securitatii Statului nr 7 Bucuresti. From 1957 to 1960 it was Scoala M.A.I. nr 2 Bucuresti. Then it was Centrul Scolar M.A.I. until 1962. From 1962 to 1972 it became Scoala Militara de Ofiteri M.A.I.. Between 1972 and 1990 it operated as the Scoala Militara de Ofiteri a Ministerului de Interne. For a single year in 1990-1991 it transformed into Scoala Militara Superioara de Ofiteri a Ministerului de Interne. Finally in 1991 it was established as Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
The Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza plays a vital role in Romania. It trains the officers who maintain public order. The academy provides education to those entering the police force. It also trains the border guard and the gendarmerie. Firefighting personnel also receive training here. These programs are available at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza even has a doctoral school of law.
The Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza is under the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It has two main faculties. The Facultatea de Politie has six departments. These include public order and safety. It also covers judicial police. There are departments for public law and private law. Behavioral sciences and socio-human sciences are studied here. Physical education and military training are also integral. The Facultatea de Pompieri trains both engineers and officers.
As of August 2018 the Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza had about 2000 students. These students were enrolled in undergraduate programs. The academy offers a range of specializations. Students can study to become police officers. Border police and Gendarmerie are also options. Studies are available full-time and part-time.
The Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza has faced its share of challenges. In October 2020 the Ministry of Education withdrew accreditation. This affected the doctoral schools of law and public order. The decision followed recommendations. The Council of Ethics and University Management made them. Public concerns about the schools also played a role. By May 2021 both doctoral schools were shut down.
Despite these past issues the Academia de Politie Alexandru Ioan Cuza remains an important institution. It continues to adapt and improve. The goal is to provide the best possible training.
