High above the city, on a ridge stretching out like a sleeping giant, stands the Abuyama Observatory. This unassuming building, established in 1930, isn’t just a place to study the stars. The Abuyama Observatory holds a secret from a time long before telescopes. In 1934, Dr. Toshi Shida, the observatory’s first director, made a startling discovery. During an excavation for seismographs, he unearthed an ancient tomb, a “kofun” in Japanese, hidden beneath the very foundations of the observatory. Inside a stone chamber lay a lacquered coffin, its occupant perfectly preserved. X-ray photographs revealed the mummy was someone of high status, adorned with gold threads that hinted at noble origins.

The identity of the mummy remains a mystery to this day. Some speculate it could be the remains of Fujiwara no Kamatari, a prominent figure in Japanese history. Kamatari, known for his political prowess and the founding of the powerful Fujiwara clan, died from a fall from his horse. Intriguingly, the mummy bore injuries consistent with such a fall. Was this noble figure laid to rest here, overlooking the sprawling plains below? The Abuyama Observatory, with its blend of scientific endeavor and ancient secrets, invites you to ponder this question. It stands as a testament to the enduring allure of the past, a place where the earth whispers tales that time cannot erase.
