Picture this a grand old school standing proudly on Absalonsgade. This is Absalons Skole a place steeped in history and learning.

Absalons Skole wasn’t always here. Originally it was known as Roskilde Friskole. ‘Friskole’ meant free of charge. Imagine the relief for families then. It was housed in a former vicarage. This old building stood behind the cathedral. A rather cramped space I imagine for eager young minds.

Then in 1893 a significant change occurred. Agent Kornerup donated land. The land was on Ringstedgade. This allowed the construction of a brand-new school. This new school would be the Absalons Skole we see today. It wasn’t just a building it was a symbol of progress.

The school expanded in 1916 growing to meet the needs of the community. Its influence spread far and wide. Further changes came in 1967. The Technical School vacated its premises at Absalonsgade 11. Absalons Skole then expanded into these buildings.

A thoughtful addition occurred in 1997. A sculpture a boy’s head was moved. It came from the now-closed Gråbrødre School. It now stands at Absalons Skole’s entrance. This subtle detail adds a layer of local history.

Absalons Skole stands as a testament to education and community. It represents Roskilde’s commitment to learning. A place where generations have learned and grown. Look closely. You can almost hear the echoes of children’s laughter through the years.
