Tucked away at the southern end of Abingdon Road in Oxford, lies a forgotten piece of railway history. Abingdon Road itself, a major artery leading south from the city, takes its name from the historic town of Abingdon. This road, once part of an ancient Saxon route, has witnessed centuries of travelers passing through. But our focus today is the site of the Abingdon Road Halt, a small railway station that once served the suburbs of Grandpont and New Hinksey. The halt, situated just south of the intriguing Red Bridge, offered a convenient stop for those journeying along the Cherwell Valley railway line. While the station itself is now gone, the area retains its connection to the railway’s past. The halt’s location, near the curve where Abingdon Road becomes Old Abingdon Road, is a testament to the changing landscape of Oxford’s transportation network. Before the Oxford Ring Road diverted traffic, Abingdon Road formed a section of the A34. The halt provided a vital link for commuters and travelers. Now, only the name Old Abingdon Road and the nearby Redbridge Park and Ride remain as hints of this bygone era. Imagine the hustle and bustle of passengers boarding and alighting at the Abingdon Road Halt. Envision the steam trains chugging along the tracks, carrying people to and from their destinations. Though the physical structure may have vanished, the stories and memories of this once-important stop linger on, interwoven with the rich history of Abingdon Road itself.
