Founded in 1945, the Abendschule Vor dem Holstentor was the second-oldest state-run evening school in Germany. It began primarily for soldiers no longer fit for service. Over time, it expanded its offerings. In 1955, it added the Abendrealschule. Then in 1987, the Abendhauptschule joined.
Located at Holstenglacis 6, the Abendschule Vor dem Holstentor provided evening classes for working adults. These students could pursue Hauptschulabschluss, Mittlere Reife or Abitur. The school catered to those seeking to complete their education later in life.
The building itself has an interesting history. Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann designed it in 1875 for the Oberrealschule am Holstenglacis. In 1912, a third story was added. The building features a distinctive yellow brick facade. With neighboring court buildings, it forms a protected historical ensemble. Inside, sunlight fills the Lichthof.
The Abendschule Vor dem Holstentor shared the building with the Studienkolleg für ausländische Studierende. In 2018, extensive renovations were completed. These included accessibility improvements, facade restoration, and upgrades to facilities. The renovations respected the building’s historical character.
The Abendschule Vor dem Holstentor was known for its commitment to students. It aimed to reduce the burden on students through special support. The school provided modern facilities. These included PC wagons with laptops and WLAN on each floor. Its “Kulturtage” at the end of the school year were also popular.
A Förderverein or support association was founded in 1992. It supported the school’s needs. The association also fostered a network for alumni. They even installed solar panels on the roof with donations.
The Abendschule Vor dem Holstentor merged with other schools in 2022. It joined the Staatliches Abendgymnasium mit Abendschule St. Georg and the Hansa-Kolleg. Together, they formed the Campus2Bildungsweg. This new center for adult education is located in St. Georg am Holzdamm. The Abendschule Vor dem Holstentor closed in January 2023.
