Abendgymnasium Hannover

Established in 1928, the Abendgymnasium Hannover stands as a beacon of second chances. This institution, right here in the Döhren district, has been empowering adults for nearly a century. The Abendgymnasium Hannover offers a unique path to higher education. It provides adults over 19 the opportunity to earn their Abitur or Fachhochschulreife. Imagine working during the day and attending classes in the evening. The Abendgymnasium Hannover makes this possible. Classes run from 5:30 pm to 9:40 pm, Monday through Friday. A commitment of 22 hours per week is required. This dedication allows students to complete their Abitur in roughly three years. In 2010, around 150 students were enrolled at the Abendgymnasium Hannover. Interestingly, about two-thirds of students discontinue their studies before completion. Perhaps the demands of balancing work, life, and education prove too challenging. The Abendgymnasium Hannover shares its building with the Hannover-Kolleg. This creates a vibrant hub for adult education in Hannover. The history of the Abendgymnasium Hannover is quite remarkable. It’s one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany and the first evening gymnasium in northern Germany. Its origins date back to September 1927. An evening school course was announced in a local newspaper. After the Easter holidays, the first classes began. Sadly, no documents remain detailing the initial efforts and circumstances surrounding its founding. However, we know that similar evening gymnasiums emerged around the same time in other German cities. These include Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Halle, Kassel, Cologne, and later, Osnabrück. The Abendgymnasium Hannover is a testament to the power of lifelong learning. It stands as a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue one’s educational goals.
