Methodism’s roots in Ghana stretch back to 1835. Dedicated local Christians sought guidance from the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. They yearned to understand the Bible better. Early missionaries faced deadly diseases like malaria. Reverend John Dunwell arrived in 1835. He was the first missionary to reach the Gold Coast. Reverend Thomas Birch Freeman continued his work. He spread the faith to the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Initially the Methodist Church Ghana was a district under British supervision. Reverend Thomas was succeeded by William West. The church expanded its operations. It reached areas within modern Accra and Nigeria.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1942. The Methodist Church Ghana partnered with the Evangelical Presbyterian Churches. Together they established the Trinity Theological Seminary. This seminary trained ministers. It equipped them with essential skills.

In 1961 the Methodist Church Ghana achieved full independence. It transitioned from a district to an autonomous body. This happened during the British Methodist Conference. The church’s evangelistic efforts extended into Nigeria. This expansion followed conflicts with the British Colonial Government.

Significant transformations occurred in 1991. The church adopted a new Episcopacy structure. The title “president” was changed to “preceding bishop”. Similarly “district chairman” became “diocesan bishop.” Laypersons were appointed as assistants to both bishops.

The church’s foundation was solidified. It was renamed Methodist Church Ghana. The Methodist Church Ghana Constitution enshrined this foundation. The church integrated education and medical care into its mission. They aimed to expand their faith base. Wesley College became the first teacher training college. It has been operating for 80 years.

The Methodist University College was founded in 2000. It offered diverse courses and programs. The institution expanded internationally. A school for the visually impaired was also established. These initiatives strengthened the faith of the community.

The Abelenkpe Methodist Church welcomes new members. It embodies a holistic framework of faith. Its mission is to share the love of Jesus. The church operates through various boards. These include education ministries youth and administration.
