Have you paused to consider the weight of history imbued in the Abdurauf Fitrat Statue before you? Abdurauf Fitrat stands as a powerful symbol of enlightenment. He fought tirelessly for the Uzbek people. This statue commemorates his life and contributions. It stands as a reminder of his enduring legacy.

Abdurauf Fitrat was born in Bukhara in 1886. His mother instilled in him a love for literature and learning. He first studied at a traditional Muslim school. Later, he attended the prestigious Miri-Arab Madrasah. There, he excelled in Uzbek Arabic and Persian literature. His teachers recognized his intelligence and resourcefulness.

Fitrat embraced Jadid ideas. He promoted enlightenment secular disciplines and the development of Turkic languages. The Jadids also championed equal rights for women. In 1910, Fitrat went to Istanbul University. He became involved with the society “Bukhara Education”. Members discussed challenges facing Turkic peoples. Fitrat published his first works Munazara and Stories of Indian Traveler. These were initially in Farsi. They were later translated into Uzbek and Russian.

While in Turkey Abdurauf Fitrat also wrote articles. They appeared in the Turkish newspaper The Right Path. He penned an open letter to the emir of Bukhara. He criticized the emir for neglecting his homeland. Fitrat said the emir was blind to the poverty of the nation.

Returning to Bukhara in 1913 Fitrat worked as a teacher. He actively promoted Jadid ideas. In 1914 he published his collection of poems Howl. In it he attacked Uzbek and Russian authorities. His views led to persecution. He was forced to move from Bukhara to Samarkand and then to Tashkent.

Despite facing adversity Fitrat achieved significant milestones. The Uzbek language became official through his efforts. He collected and systematized invaluable manuscripts. He opened the first music school. Fitrat sent a delegation of students to Germany for training. He oversaw the publication of textbooks and the opening of a national theater.

However his happiness was short-lived. In 1923 Moscow demanded his removal from his position. He was summoned to Moscow and placed under strict NKVD supervision. He worked as a professor at the Institute of Oriental Studies. In 1927 Fitrat returned to his homeland. He worked at the Samarkand Pedagogical Institute. He also worked at the Tashkent Institute of Language and Literature. He wrote his best works during those years. His works reflected the struggle against local government and the Bolsheviks.

In 1937 Abdurauf Fitrat was arrested. In 1938 he was executed as an enemy of the people. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1962. Fitrat dedicated his life to the enlightenment and prosperity of Uzbekistan. Ironically he died because of the government’s unenlightened views.

This Abdurauf Fitrat Statue serves as a poignant reminder. It reminds us of Fitrat’s unwavering commitment to progress. He fought tirelessly for his people. His legacy continues to inspire generations. It urges us to value enlightenment and freedom of thought.
