Beneath the dazzling Dubai skyline, on the iconic Palm Jumeirah, sits a mosque unlike any other. The Abdulrahman Siddik Mosque, also known as the “Spine Mosque,” challenges traditional Islamic architecture with its striking contemporary design. The mosque’s unique cubist structure, a gleaming beacon of white and blue glass, immediately captures the eye. Imagine a 20-meter high dome, crafted from vibrant blue glass, reaching towards the heavens. This isn’t just a visual marvel. The transparent glass of the dome and sections of the walls are designed to enhance the spiritual experience, allowing natural light to filter in, subtly guiding worshippers towards the Qibla in Mecca. The Abdulrahman Siddik Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It represents a modern interpretation of Islamic architectural principles. Jordanian architect Dr. Farouk Yaghmour envisioned a space that prioritized simplicity and spirituality, minimizing ornate details to foster a deeper connection with faith. The mosque’s minimalist design, achieved through the use of modern materials like marble, concrete, glass, steel, and aluminum, cost 21 million dirhams. It’s a testament to how contemporary design can be both beautiful and cost-effective. The Abdulrahman Siddik Mosque spans over 1,700 square meters and can accommodate 1,000 worshippers. 800 men can pray in the main prayer hall, while the women’s section provides space for 200. The mosque also includes separate courts for men and women, two ablution areas, and residences for the imam and muezzin. This architectural marvel, completed in just two years, stands as a testament to Dr. Yaghmour’s vision. The Abdulrahman Siddik Mosque offers a unique spiritual experience, blending modern aesthetics with traditional Islamic values, right here in the heart of Dubai.
