The Abbazia di Mirasole began in the 13th century. The Humiliati, a religious order, founded it. They were known for their dedication to working with wool. The Abbazia’s economy thrived on wool production. They even made woollen cloth with innovative systems. Mirasole possessed unique machines. These machines transformed wool into felt.
The church within the Abbazia di Mirasole is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its construction spanned from the late 1300s to the early 1400s. However the bell tower is even older. It dates back to the 1200s. The church’s facade faces south. This symbolically suggests a gaze towards Christ. A rosette adorns the facade. There are also two terracotta low-reliefs. They depict the Agnus Dei. This is an ancient emblem of the Humiliati. It shows the celebration of a Mass. Inside, the presbytery features a frescoed vault. It depicts the four Evangelists. The Humiliati order was suppressed in 1571. The Abbazia became property of the Collegio Elvetico in Milan. Later, in 1797, it was given to the Ospedale Maggiore of Milan. In 2013, Premonstratensian canons moved in. They formed the Priorato San Norberto. It was a priory of Mondaye Abbey in France. However, they left in 2016 due to a lack of members.
