Whispers of monks echoed through the centuries as I approached the Abbazia di Chiaravalle. It was 1135. Milan buzzed with tension, caught in a papal schism. The city stood defiant against the rest of Lombardy, supporting Pope Innocent II against the antipope Anacleto II. Enter Bernard of Clairvaux, a charismatic figure who swayed the Milanese to his cause, ending the conflict. Grateful for his intervention, the city fathers pledged to build a magnificent monastery in his honor. Bernard chose a marshy area south of the city, known as Roveniano, for the Abbazia di Chiaravalle. The first Cistercian monks arrived, not from Clairvaux directly, but from Moiremont, near Dijon. They began the arduous task of draining the land, laying the foundation for both a spiritual and agricultural revolution. The Abbazia di Chiaravalle rose slowly, a testament to Cistercian ingenuity and devotion. The current church, begun between 1150 and 1160, showcases a blend of Romanesque and early Gothic styles, a pioneering example of the latter in Italy. In 1221, the church was consecrated, dedicated to Santa Maria. The monks’ dedication extended beyond the spiritual. They transformed the once-swampy Roveniano into fertile farmland, contributing significantly to the economic growth of the region. Some even whisper that the famed Grana Padano cheese originated within these very walls, a delicious byproduct of the monks’ agricultural prowess. The Abbazia di Chiaravalle flourished for centuries, attracting artists like Bernardino Luini and the Fiammenghini brothers, who adorned the church with vibrant frescoes, a departure from the Cistercians’ initial austere aesthetic. However, turmoil arrived in 1798 with the arrival of the Cisalpine Republic. The monks were expelled, and the monastery fell into disrepair. Only the church, parts of the smaller cloister, the refectory, and entrance buildings survived the planned demolition. A long period of neglect followed, broken only by the purchase and restoration efforts of the Office for the Preservation of Monuments in 1893. The 20th century witnessed the Abbazia di Chiaravalle’s revival. In 1952, the Cistercians returned, committed to continuing the legacy of their predecessors. They painstakingly restored the buildings, ensuring the Abbazia di Chiaravalle remains a vibrant center of faith and a testament to the enduring power of the Cistercian order. Look up at the Ciribiciaccola, the multi-tiered bell tower. Listen closely, and you might just hear the whispers of monks, the clang of the ancient Bernarda bell, a timeless echo of the Abbazia di Chiaravalle’s rich and resilient history.
