Consider two male nudes. These figures form the San Ildefonso Group or the Orestes Sculpture. We are standing before a superb reflection of Augustan classicism.

The Orestes Sculpture shows Orestes and Pylades. They were legendary models of friendship. The sculpture depicts them offering a sacrifice. They returned to Tauris with the image of Artemis. Artemis is the statuette on the right. This act purified Orestes. It freed him from his divine punishment. Some say these statues represent Castor and Pollux.

This Orestes Sculpture is made of white Carrara marble. It was crafted in the 1st century AD. Its dimensions are 161 x 106 cm.

Let me tell you a bit about the history of the Orestes Sculpture. It was discovered in Rome in 1623. One hundred years later, it arrived at the palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso.

The earliest reference to this group dates from 1623. At that time, it was at the Villa Ludovisi in Rome. It belonged to Cardinal Massimi. After the Cardinal’s death, it became part of Christine of Sweden’s collections. Then it entered the collection of Felipe V. He was the first Bourbon king of Spain. He lived from 1683 to 1746.

The Prado Museum is not only a world-leading picture gallery. It also has a valuable sculpture collection. This collection comes mainly from the Royal Collections. It also includes pieces from Queen Christine of Sweden. She abdicated in the 17th century. She retired to Rome. There, she became a Catholic. She loved art. She gathered a magnificent collection of Classical sculptures. The museum acquired this collection at auction. This collection and the Spanish Crown’s collection make up the Prado Museum’s Classical sculpture collection.

The San Ildefonso Group gets its name from the palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. It is Hellenic in style. It dates from the last period of Greek sculpture. This was during the empire of Alexander and his successors. That was between the 4th and 1st century BC. Sculpture at this time displayed ever-greater prowess. It featured foreshortened figures, movement, and realism.

The Orestes and Pylades group presents two male nudes. The anatomy is exquisite. The two figures are beautifully balanced. Orestes was the son of Agamemnon. With his friend Pylades’ help, he killed his adulterous mother and her lover Aegisthus.

Note the Roman portrait of Antinous. It was added to the left torso in modern times. This Orestes Sculpture shows how the Prado Museum contains fascinating layers of history. From its creation in ancient Rome to its acquisition by Spanish royalty, this group embodies classical ideals of friendship and sacrifice. Take a moment to appreciate the exquisite anatomy and the enduring story it tells.
