A bronze sculpture stands before you. It is A Gift from the United Mexican States to Ireland. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a tribute to the Saint Patrick’s Battalion. These were Irish soldiers who fought for Mexico against the United States in the Mexican-American War.

Imagine the year is 1846. Thousands of Irish immigrants arrived in America. Many were fleeing the Great Famine. Poverty was widespread. These men often joined the US Army for work. They faced discrimination. They were often mistreated. Many were Catholic. They were subjected to anti-Catholic sentiments. Some were even forced to attend Protestant church services.

John Riley was one such man. He served in the US Army. He deserted. He joined the Mexican Army. He was a key figure in the formation of the Saint Patrick’s Battalion. The battalion consisted of mostly Irish soldiers. There were also German Canadian English French Italian Polish Scottish Spanish Swiss and Mexican soldiers. Most were Catholic. They fought bravely. They fought in many bloody battles.

The Battle of Churubusco was particularly fierce. The Saint Patrick’s Battalion made a last stand. Approximately 35 members were killed. Another 85 were captured. Many were executed. They were hanged. This was a mass execution. It was the largest in US history. Riley avoided this fate. He deserted before the US declared war on Mexico. He was branded with a D for deserter. He later received the rank of Major in the Mexican Army.

The sculpture you see before you honors these men. It commemorates their sacrifice. It is a symbol of friendship between Mexico and Ireland. It’s a reminder of a shared history a history of courage and defiance. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Saint Patrick’s Battalion. It’s a poignant reminder that history is far more complex than simple narratives of good guys and bad guys often allow. Take a moment to reflect on the story etched in bronze before you.
