“Ninety additional living spaces?” That’s what they managed to squeeze in during construction. Today we are standing in front of 9-й учебный корпус. It is located in Saint Petersburg. More precisely it is located on Politekhnicheskaya Street 21.

9-й учебный корпус is part of the Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University. This building has a fascinating history. It reflects the architectural styles and needs of its time.

Construction on 9-й учебный корпус began in May 1953. It was completed in June 1957. The architect R. A. Bergman designed it. It was built in the style of Soviet Neoclassicism. This style was popular during Stalin’s era. Therefore it is also known as Stalinist Neoclassicism.

The building was originally designed to house 200 rooms. However during construction the plans were altered. Some utility rooms were moved to the basement. This allowed for the creation of 9 more living spaces on the floors above.

9-й учебный корпус has a unique facade. The street facade faces Politekhnicheskaya Street. The facade is decorated with textured reinforced concrete slabs. The courtyard facade is covered with silicate bricks. This gives the building a distinct look from different angles.

The building has five floors. Its walls are made of brick and are 56 cm thick. The foundation consists of assembled reinforced concrete slabs. These features ensure the building’s stability and durability.

The construction of 9-й учебный корпус was managed by the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. Specifically it was managed by Trust 87. This institute played a vital role in the building’s creation.

In the 1970s and 1990s 9-й учебный корпус served as a dormitory. It was mainly for international students. These students came from Asia and Africa.

The building received a “good” rating from a state commission. This happened on June 1 1957. This rating reflects the quality of its construction.

Today 9-й учебный корпус remains an important part of the university. It continues to serve its purpose as a study building. It also stands as a reminder of the architectural trends from the mid-20th century.

So here we conclude our visit to 9-й учебный корпус. It is a building with a story of architectural adaptation. It also shows a change in student accommodation. I hope you enjoyed learning about this interesting place.
