“Five huge nails,” some called it. Others saw blades of grass. Today, we stand before the Beijing Olympic Tower, also known as 7. Tower South. It is an iconic structure in Beijing’s Olympic Green. Its story is one of design inspiration, controversy, and breathtaking views.
Construction on the Beijing Olympic Tower began in 2011. It was completed in 2014. The tower officially opened on August 8, 2015. This date coincided with the anniversary of the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The Beijing Olympic Tower was designed by the China Architecture Design & Research Group. Cui Kai and Li Cundong led the design team. Their concept drew inspiration from blades of grass. The five circular tops represent the Olympic rings.
However, the design process wasn’t without its challenges. A Shenzhen architect, Ping Caohan, claimed the design was plagiarized. He alleged it copied his earlier concept. His design also featured five towers with observation pods. The firm denied these allegations.
Rising to 258 meters, the Beijing Olympic Tower is the second tallest tower in Beijing. Only the Central Radio & TV Tower is taller. It is the fourth-tallest structure in the city overall.
The Beijing Olympic Tower comprises five separate towers. They rest on a large concrete foundation. The foundation covers 30,000 square meters. The central tower is the tallest, surrounded by four smaller towers. These lesser towers reach different heights. The lowest stands at 186 meters. Diagonal members connect the smaller towers to the main structure.
Inside, two elevators whisk visitors to the top of the central tower. These elevators operate independently. From the observation platforms, panoramic views unfold. You can see the entire Olympic Green area. On a clear day, the Forbidden City and other central Beijing landmarks are visible.
The Beijing Olympic Tower sits on a 7.5-hectare landscaped area. The surrounding terrain is mostly urban open space. Planted parkland and open plazas surround the tower.
To the east, an artificial waterbody curves. It defines the Olympic Green neighborhood. To the north lies the Olympic Forest Park. It is a vast nature preserve. To the south are former Olympic venues. These include the China National Convention Center and the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest.
Originally, a revolving restaurant was planned for the top of the tower. It promised diners a unique experience. Imagine savoring a meal with a constantly changing view of Beijing.
The Beijing Olympic Tower stands as a testament to modern design. It also serves as a reminder of the 2008 Olympic Games. Its unique shape and impressive height make it a prominent landmark. Take a moment to appreciate the innovative architecture. Admire the stunning views from the top. The Beijing Olympic Tower embodies Beijing’s ambition and spirit.
