“A crown, you say? On the flag?” Our little nation of Liechtenstein might surprise you. It’s a land of contrasts, tucked away in the heart of Europe. It boasts towering mountains and a flag that echoes its unique story: a blue and red banner with a golden crown, a symbol of our princely heritage. Liechtenstein is one of the last vestiges of the Holy Roman Empire, becoming an independent principality in 1719. The crown on our flag, however, wasn’t added until 1937. Why so late? Well, it’s a tale of Olympic spirit and a touch of embarrassment. During the 1936 Summer Olympics, Liechtenstein discovered its flag was identical to Haiti’s! To avoid any future confusion, the distinctive yellow crown was incorporated, setting our nation’s symbol apart. It’s a testament to Liechtenstein’s ability to adapt and assert its identity, even on the world stage.
