On a spring day in 1961, a new monument arose on the Korea University campus. This monument, the 418 기념탑 기념비 (418 Memorial Monument), was more than just stone and bronze. It was a testament to the courage of students who dared to challenge injustice. The 418 Memorial Monument commemorates the one-year anniversary of the April 18 Korea University Student Movement. This movement was a pivotal moment in Korea’s fight for democracy.
The 418 Korea University Student Movement was part of the larger April Revolution of 1960. Students protested a rigged presidential election and police brutality under Syngman Rhee’s authoritarian rule. The movement at Korea University began with roughly 3,000 students peacefully demonstrating in front of the National Assembly. Tragically, on their return to campus, a politically motivated gang attacked them. One student died. Dozens more were injured. This violence fueled further protests in Seoul, culminating in the April 19 Revolution. Rhee’s resignation on April 26 followed.
The 418 Memorial Monument stands as a powerful symbol of these events. The granite structure is imposing. It measures 513.2 cm wide, 300 cm high, and 113 cm deep. Look closely at the details. At the upper left, a relief sculpture depicts marching students. This work is by Min Bok-jin. At the lower right, an obsidian plate bears a poignant inscription: “Freedom! You Are an Always Active Volcano!” This powerful message was written by Jo Ji-hun, a Korea University professor and poet. Kim Chung-hyeon, a renowned calligrapher, inscribed these words. Below, a bronze laurel wreath encircles a rose of Sharon, Korea’s national flower. This symbolizes both victory and national identity.
The 418 Memorial Monument isn’t just a static object. It represents the ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by students who fought for a better future. It serves as a symbol of hope and inspiration. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, the pursuit of justice and freedom is a volcano that never sleeps.
