“Hold tight to your hats!” We are about to uncover the tale of the 3rd Elagin Bridge. This bridge isn’t just steel and concrete. It is a gateway to stories and a testament to St. Petersburg’s ingenuity.

The 3rd Elagin Bridge graces the Bolshaya Nevka River. It serves as the grand entrance to the Central Recreation and Leisure Park on Yelagin Island. Imagine a stroll across this bridge. You are entering a world of relaxation and natural beauty.

In 1826, a floating bridge marked this spot. Then, in 1840, things got serious. A permanent nine-span wooden strut-framed bridge emerged. It even had a central draw span. Picture a twin-leaf bascule bridge. Four wooden frames lifted by manual winches.

Time marched on and the bridge needed an upgrade. Between 1949 and 1951, engineers V.V. Demchenko and V.V. Blazhevich transformed the bridge. It became an eight-span structure with a central draw span. Think of metal welded spans and concrete abutments.

The roadway once featured asphaltic concrete on timber slabs. The draw span had timber decking. A simple patterned metal railing mirrored the style of the 1st and 2nd Elagin Bridges.

The 3rd Elagin Bridge saw its fair share of repairs. In 1976, timber slabs gave way to concrete. Asphalt concrete pavement was restored. The draw span received some much-needed attention. Then, in 1982, the mechanisms and electrical devices were overhauled.

The late 90s brought added protection. In 1999, metal protective pile groups were installed. They guarded the bridge supports.

The 3rd Elagin Bridge faced a major change in 2008. The old structure was demolished. By 2009, a new metal three-span fixed bridge stood in its place.

Beyond its structure, the 3rd Elagin Bridge has a unique draw. It is a haven for local fishermen. They cast their lines hoping to catch chub using a donkey rig with melted cheese bait. At night, the Bolshaya Nevka River teems with silver bream, rudd, ide, and bream.

The 3rd Elagin Bridge stands as more than just a crossing. It connects the city to nature. It is a place for recreation. It is a silent witness to the lives and stories of St. Petersburg.
