Ever wonder how Guilin defended itself? Here at the 3rd defence, we uncover a story etched in stone. Let’s step back in time. Guilin, a city celebrated for its stunning karst landscape, boasts a history reaching back millennia.

Guilin’s strategic importance grew. It became a vital hub connecting the sea to the Central Plains. This transformation began in 214 BC. Emperor Qinshihuang of the Qin Dynasty ordered the construction of the Lingqu Canal. This canal linked the Xiangjiang River and the Lijiang River.

Guilin owes its name to fragrant cinnamon trees. The Chinese knew cinnamon as “玉桂”. Evidence suggests human ancestors resided here around 10,000 years ago. Discoveries in Baoji cliff and Zengpi cliff caves support this.

Guilin was home to the Baiyue people. This was during the Xia, Shang, and Zhou Dynasties. Later, in 111 BC, Shi’an county was established. This county falls within modern Guilin.

For a long time Guilin was the capital of Guangxi Province. But this changed during the Republic of China era. Guilin played a crucial role. It served as a Nationalist Party strategic base. Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek were leaders.

Guilin was liberated in 1949. It came under the direct administration of Guangxi Province. Later, in 1958, it was renamed Guilin city. This included urban and suburban areas.

The city’s defenses witnessed conflict. In 1944, Japanese forces briefly captured Guilin. But Chinese troops soon retook the city.

Guilin was listed as a priority project in 1981. The State Council recognized its historical, cultural, and natural significance.

Today, Guilin thrives. It seamlessly blends ancient heritage with modern progress. The 3rd defence reminds us of Guilin’s enduring spirit. It reflects resilience through changing times. Its walls whisper tales of emperors and battles. They speak of cultural preservation. The city’s story continues.
