Consider the Edge. It juts out from the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards. Today we explore this supertall skyscraper. 30 Hudson Yards stands proudly on Manhattan’s West Side. It is near Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea. This neo-futuristic building is part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project.
30 Hudson Yards reaches 1270 feet. That is about 390 meters. It holds 103 floors. This makes it the sixth-tallest building in New York City. It is also the eighth-tallest in the United States as of November 2022.
Construction of 30 Hudson Yards began December 4 2012. The project redeveloped the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s West Side Yard. This allowed the Gateway Rail Tunnel to pass underground. The platform rests on caissons. These are drilled into Manhattan schist bedrock.
Time Warner announced its move to 30 Hudson Yards in 2013. They vacated their Time Warner Center headquarters at Columbus Circle. WarnerMedia occupied half the building below the 38th floor. In mid-2015 construction began. The structure’s first floors rose above ground by January 2016.
The Edge observation deck is a highlight of 30 Hudson Yards. It opened in March 2020. The Edge is a triangular platform. It sticks out from the main building. The Edge extends 80 feet south. Kohn Pedersen Fox designed 30 Hudson Yards. Thornton Tomasetti was the lead structural engineer. Jaros Baum and Bolles provided MEP engineering. The lobby contains Jaume Plensa artwork. Eleven stainless steel spheres hang from the ceiling. They symbolize global unity.
The 101st floor features the Peak with Priceless Restaurant event space. Warner Bros Discovery subsidiary Home Box Office Inc is based here. In January 2019 WarnerMedia sought a buyer. They wanted to lease back their office condominium. Related and Allianz purchased the space for $2.2 billion. They signed a 15-year lease.
