A monument of progress stands before you. This is the 3. Meilenstein Osttangente Stone. It marks a significant moment in Flensburg’s transportation history. Let’s delve into the story behind this stone.

The Osttangente, or eastern bypass, is a vital road for Flensburg. The idea for this four-lane expressway arose in the early 1950s. Planning became more concrete in the 1970s. Construction finally began in 1991. The 3. Meilenstein Osttangente Stone commemorates the completion of a key phase. It was finished on October 8 2006.

Imagine Flensburg before the Osttangente. The city center likely faced more congestion. The Osttangente aimed to alleviate this. It diverts traffic around the city core. This benefits residents and visitors alike. The road stretches from Flensburg’s southern district to near Mürwik.

The project was divided into three sections. The first section from Bundesstraße 200 to Eckernförder Landstraße was built in 1991 and 1992. In 2001 the section to Adelbylund was opened. The final section to Nordstraße near Engelsby was the most controversial.

Even in 2005 the citizens’ initiative Lautrupsbachtal demanded an alternative route. It would have crossed the Vogelsang. This alternative would have destroyed even more natural areas. It would have connected fewer parts of the city. The final section was completed in 2006. At the same time, the Nordstraße was expanded to four lanes. This expansion reached Schottweg in Mürwik. This benefits Wees and Glücksburg as well.

The Osttangente’s construction wasn’t without challenges. Some residents and environmental groups voiced concerns. Despite these challenges, the road was completed. The 3. Meilenstein Osttangente Stone stands as a testament to overcoming these hurdles. The road cost 4.3 million euros.

Consider the impact of the Osttangente. New districts have grown on both sides of the road. These growing districts rely on the bypass. The Osttangente supports Flensburg’s growth and connectivity.

As you stand before the 3. Meilenstein Osttangente Stone reflect on the planning. Consider the debates and the ultimate realization of this project. It symbolizes Flensburg’s commitment to progress. It is a lasting impact on the city’s landscape.
