“Why do we build such structures?” That’s the question that comes to mind as we stand before the 2ter Weltkrieg Monument War memorial in Frankfurt. This is a place to remember the horrors of World War II. It stands as a stark reminder of the city’s suffering. Frankfurt was heavily damaged by air raids. The 2ter Weltkrieg Monument War memorial serves as a place to reflect on the impact of those devastating events.

Frankfurt was one of the most bombed cities during World War II. Over 75 air raids rained down on the city. The Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces conducted these attacks. They dropped over 26,000 tons of bombs. The attacks of March 18 and 22, 1944, forever changed Frankfurt’s landscape.

Official statistics say that 5,559 people in Frankfurt died during the war. This number includes 4,822 residents. It also includes prisoners of war and forced laborers. The firestorm of March 1944 destroyed cultural monuments. It obliterated the medieval Old Town. The New Town with its half-timbered houses also burned down. Other areas like Bockenheim and Ostend were over 70% destroyed. Around 90,000 apartments were lost. Almost all public buildings were destroyed too.

By 1945, Frankfurt’s population had plummeted. It went from 553,000 in 1939 to about 230,000. Half of these people were homeless. Around 17 million cubic meters of rubble covered the city. According to some reports, Frankfurt was the most bombed city in the world at that time.

The first direct civilian attack on Frankfurt occurred on July 25, 1942. British bombers aimed at civilian targets. Attacks intensified. In October 1943, 300 British airplanes dropped numerous bombs. These included incendiary bombs. The attack on March 22, 1944, destroyed the old city. Thousands of civilians died. 150,000 were left without shelter.

Post-war reconstruction favored modern architecture. Some landmark buildings were rebuilt in a simple, historical style. The first building rebuilt was the Paulskirche. It was rebuilt in 1789.

Even decades after the war, unexploded bombs are still found in Frankfurt. In December 2020, thousands evacuated due to a WWII bomb. Such discoveries highlight the war’s lasting impact.
