“Five huge nails,” they said. That’s what some folks called the Beijing Olympic Tower, or as it’s known locally, the Běijīng Àolínpǐkè Tǎ, back when it was being built. But trust me, standing here at its base, you’ll see it’s so much more. The 2. Tower South isn’t part of the Olympic Tower complex, but the tower offers a spectacular view of this modern marvel. The 258-meter tower, the second tallest in Beijing, opened in 2015. It was completed three years after the 2008 Summer Olympics. The 2. Tower South is an ancient defensive structure. It has witnessed centuries of history unfold, and even played a small role in the Boxer Rebellion. This tower offers a unique perspective on the city’s past and present. The architects, Cui Kai and Li Cundong, designed it to resemble blades of grass. The five circular platforms at different heights mimic the Olympic rings. From these platforms, and especially the top floor observatory, the views are breathtaking. You can see the entire Olympic Green stretching out before you, the iconic Bird’s Nest stadium, and even glimpse the Forbidden City in the distance. It’s a popular spot, so expect some company. But the experience of standing high above the city, taking in the vast panorama, is well worth sharing. Now, lift your gaze upwards and imagine the city unfolding beneath you, a tapestry of history and modernity.
