Gazing upon 2# Flyover, you might not realize you’re looking at a small piece of a record-breaking feat. This flyover is a part of something much larger. It contributes to the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is an immense project. It connects Shenzhen and Zhongshan. This link includes underwater tunnels, bridges, and artificial islands. It is one of the world’s most challenging cross-sea projects.

Imagine constructing a passage like the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. It stretches 24 kilometers across the Pearl River estuary. Before its construction, traveling between Shenzhen and Zhongshan took about two hours. Now, it takes less than 30 minutes. The 2# Flyover plays a crucial role in making this possible.

Consider the Lingdingyang Bridge. It is a key part of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. Its main span measures 1,666 meters. It is the world’s largest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. Think about the engineering required for that!

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link also features the world’s largest undersea tunnel. It uses a steel shell concrete tube design. The tunnel is 6.8 km long and 46 meters wide. Constructing this required millimeter-level precision. They had to dock 23 immersed tubes. Each tube weighed about 80,000 metric tons. These tubes were placed nearly 40 meters deep.

Engineers also built two artificial islands. Each has an area equivalent to 19 international standard football fields. They had less than six months to complete them. These projects overcame many technical challenges.

One challenge was ensuring accuracy. The construction process was irreversible. There was no room for error. The team adopted 3D printing technology. It developed a customized intelligent pouring system. This saved 2,500 hours of machinery time.

Innovations extended to underwater technology. Engineers developed an underwater 3D printer. It is a gravel leveling ship. This ship achieved full localization of hardware and software. It met precision requirements for tunnel bed construction. The team integrated the BeiDou system into immersed tube construction.

Protecting the marine environment was also crucial. The Pearl River Estuary is a habitat for Chinese white dolphins. Traditional dredging methods like blasting would harm them. A precise mechanical rock-breaking technique was developed instead. This cost an extra 30 million yuan and a year of time. This minimized the impact on the dolphins.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link opened to traffic on June 30. In its first 24 hours, it saw 125,000 vehicles. In its first month, over 3 million vehicles crossed it. Although some congestion was reported initially, the link has greatly reduced travel times.

So, as you pass over the 2# Flyover, remember it is more than just a bridge. It represents innovation, precision, and dedication to both progress and the environment. It shows how complex projects can transform a region.
