Today the university’s student societies are just as active. Ten societies focus on physical labor. However their work has broadened. You have pedagogical societies like Skazka Unison ROS Granat and Perspektiva. There is an archaeological team Thor an agricultural society Povidlo a train conductor society Merkuriy an environmental society Mozhzhevelnik and a medical society Neiron.
Imagine SPbU students working as camp counselors archaeologists participating in excavations and medical students assisting in regional hospitals. It’s impressive. Future educators spend their holidays guiding children. Archaeology students spend their summers uncovering history.
The SPbU archaeological team Thor is especially noteworthy. Founded on February 17th over a decade ago Thor was recognized as the best archaeological team in Saint Petersburg in 2024. The team has participated in expeditions across Russia and even in Belarus. Their work is vital for preserving the past.
One member Maria Zhitnukhina a fourth-year programming student leads Thor. She describes their summer in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. They lived on a sandbar surrounded by swamps far from civilization. Reaching this remote site required a helicopter or a buran a snowmobile adapted for swamps.
But these student societies are more than just hard workers. They participate in creative sports and intellectual events.
