Illuminated against the Cambridge skyline, the 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign stands as a testament to a bygone era. This isn’t just a sign. It’s a piece of history. It’s a story etched in neon and steel.

The 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign began its life in Boston. It was perched atop the Shell Company building on Commonwealth Avenue. That building is now home to Boston University Academy.

Imagine the sign in 1933. It was a beacon of modernity. It was a symbol of progress. Donnelly Electric Manufacturing Company built it in the Moderne style.

In 1944, the 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign made its journey across the Charles River. It found its new home here adjacent to Memorial Drive.

Bill Davis, a Pearl Street resident, remembers that day. He recalls the sign being moved when Memorial Drive opened in 1948. Davis’s father even used to dock his boat where the gas station now stands. The Charles River was once tidal here. Richard Davis’s boat would rise and fall with the water. This was long before the Shell station existed.

The 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign shares the spotlight with Boston’s Citgo sign. They are the area’s only two surviving advertising signs of their kind.

While regular Shell station signs change with the times, this one remains. The 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign stays true to its original design and location.

Sometimes, things go wrong. In the past, some of the neon lights went out. The “S” vanished. Suddenly, “HELL” was emblazoned across the skyline. People noticed quickly. The gas station owner Tibor Hangyal said that corporate headquarters was not happy. They ordered the sign to be shut off immediately.

In 1994, the 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognizes its cultural and historical value.

In 2011, the original neon was replaced with LED lights. However, the sign’s iconic look remains unchanged. It still captures the spirit of 1933.

So, the next time you pass by the 1933 Shell Spectacular Sign, remember its journey. Think about its history. Think about its bright lights. Think about the stories it could tell. It is more than just a sign. It is a Cambridge landmark.
