Lost in thought are we? This 1914-1918 1939-1945 War memorial stands as a solemn reminder. It commemorates Hamburg’s residents killed in both World War I and World War II.

The 1914-1918 1939-1945 War memorial was first erected after World War I. It was meant to honor those lost in that conflict. The destruction of World War II necessitated reconstruction. It became a memorial for both wars.

Look closely at the inscription. One side bears the inscription. It reads: “Vierzig tausend sohne der standt liessen ihr lieben fur euch 1914-1918.” This translates to “Forty thousand sons of the city gave their lives for you 1914-1918.”

This 1914-1918 1939-1945 War memorial serves as a place of remembrance. It reminds us of the immense sacrifice made by the people of Hamburg. They gave their lives during those devastating years.

The 1914-1918 1939-1945 War memorial’s original inscription dates back to 1931. It specifically honored soldiers killed in World War I. The text served as a poignant reminder of loss.

The 1914-1918 1939-1945 War memorial stands near the city hall. It is more than just stone and inscription. It embodies the collective memory of a city scarred by war.

The sculptor Claus Hoffmann created a stele. It stands at the foot of the quarter-circle staircase leading to the Kleinen Alster. Ernst Barlach’s relief “Mourning Mother with Child” adorns the back.

Initially constructed between 1930 and 1932, it served as a central memorial. It honored those who fell in war. The Nazi Senate removed it in 1938. It was reconstructed after 1945.

Hamburg Cemetery became a significant site during and after both World Wars. During World War I, over 300 Allied servicemen were buried here. They died as prisoners of war.

In 1923, a decision was made. Commonwealth servicemen graves scattered across Germany would be consolidated. They would be brought into four permanent cemeteries. Hamburg was chosen as one of those locations.

Graves were moved from 120 burial grounds. These grounds were in Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg, Oldenburg and more. Most of these men died as prisoners. Some were sailors. Their bodies washed ashore on the Frisian Islands.

Today, the cemetery holds 708 First World War servicemen. They are buried or commemorated in the Commonwealth plot. Special memorials honor those whose graves were lost.

Sailors recovered from HM Submarine E24 are also remembered. The submarine sank off Heligoland in 1916. It was raised in 1974.

The Commonwealth section includes 1,466 Second World War burials. Most were servicemen who died with occupying forces. Some were airmen lost in bombing raids. There are also post-war graves.
