“Freedom of academic culture”. That’s the motto echoing within these very walls of 13号館, a building nestled within the sprawling embrace of Kyoto University. You might be surprised to know that this motto, so central to the university’s identity, has a fascinating backstory. It all began in the early days of Kyoto University, back when it was still known as Kyoto Imperial University. Established in 1897, the university faced a challenge. Its graduates weren’t faring well in the highly competitive Higher Civil Service Examinations. This puzzled Professor Yoshihito Takane, a prominent figure in commercial law. He looked to the West, particularly to Germany, for inspiration. He observed a different approach to education, one that emphasized “the freedom of research, teaching, and learning”. Takane believed this focus on academic freedom fostered critical thinking and independent scholarship. He introduced this “German way” to Kyoto Imperial University. His vision resonated deeply with the university’s spirit. The phrase “Freedom of academic culture”, or “Jiyū no Gakufū” in Japanese, became a guiding principle, shaping generations of scholars at 13号館 and across Kyoto University. So, as you walk through these halls, remember the legacy of Professor Takane and his commitment to the pursuit of knowledge without constraints. The spirit of “Freedom of academic culture” thrives to this day within the heart of 13号館.
