A drumbeat echoes through time. This is the Drum Tower East. Or rather what remains of it. For centuries it stood tall a testament to Beijing’s rich history. Built in 1272 during the Yuan dynasty it was originally called the Tower of Orderly Administration. It was a vital part of the city’s timekeeping system. Imagine the rhythmic beat of the drums announcing the passage of hours. The sounds carrying across the city. A symphony of time. The drums and the bells in the nearby Bell Tower marked the hours. They regulated the lives of officials and citizens.

The Drum Tower wasn’t just a timepiece. It was a symbol. It represented the balance of the universe. Metal wood water fire earth. Sun and moon. All held within its sturdy structure. Its significance was profound. Its location at the northern end of the Inner City’s central axis was deliberate. It played a crucial role. The tower however endured changes. In 1420 it was rebuilt east of its original site. More renovations followed in 1800 under the Qing.

After the 1924 Beijing Coup things changed. The last emperor was expelled. Western clocks took over. The tower’s name morphed into the Tower of Clarifying Shame. It became a museum. Exhibits related to the Eight-Nation Alliance’s invasion and the May 30th Massacre were displayed. The Drum Tower’s story is complex. It’s not just about drums and bells. It’s about power shifts. It’s about a city changing with the times. It’s about the echoes of history.

The tower itself is a sight to behold. A 47-meter-tall two-story wooden structure. Its upper story once housed a main drum and twenty-four smaller drums. Only the main one remains. It’s a massive drum. Its ox hide head is 1.5 meters in diameter. A sword score mars its surface. A memento from the invasion. New drums now stand in place of the old. They fulfill the historical role. The Drum Tower today serves as the People’s Cultural Hall. This is after extensive repair work in the 1980s. The tower continues to stand. A beacon of Beijing’s past. A reminder of the rhythm of history itself. A story etched in wood and stone. A story you can feel here today.
