“Built shortly after 1830,” someone whispers, “but not on Baker’s map.” Welcome to 1 Brookside a building steeped in Cambridge history. It stands as a testament to architectural evolution and the lives intertwined within its walls.

1 Brookside began as a house. The Royal Commission Survey of Cambridge in 1959 noted its early construction. It wasn’t featured on R. G. Baker’s map of 1830. But it must have been built soon after. A large semi-octagonal bay was added on the west side. The interior was later subdivided in the same century. The house shows a departure from strict symmetry. It leaned toward a picturesque composition.

In 1855, architect John Smith had 1 Brookside built.

Let’s step back to 1901. John Smith a widower lived here. He was 86 years old and worked as an insurance agent. With him were Katharine and Emma. They never married and were both born in Cambridge. Jane Kirkup also lived there as did Ethel Scott and Minnie Nunn.

Now, fast forward to 1911. Katherine Smith lived at 1 Brookside on Bateman Street. She lived with her sister Emma. Another sister Margaret also lived there. The sisters were of independent means. Jane E. Kirkup remained as a servant. Louisa Nunn and Minnie Nunn also served.

By 1913, the house was occupied by a Miss Smith.

In 1962, the University Botanic Garden had a presence here. Stewart M. Walters was associated with the address. The Botanical Society of the British Isles also had ties to 1 Brookside.

1 Brookside is listed on the National Heritage List for England. This affirms its importance as a place of historical interest.

The walls of 1 Brookside have seen families grow and change. They have sheltered professionals and servants alike. The very stones whisper tales of Cambridge’s past. From its architectural modifications to its notable residents 1 Brookside stands as a symbol of enduring history. It quietly contributes to the rich tapestry of this famous city.
